This kind of forecast construction ameliorates the ‘black box’ problem of generating pattern output without an understanding of the pattern’s creation or contextual meaning that is often seen when using other methods, particularly machine learning and artificial intelligence. Description: SOA sponsored research tackled potential low-interest-rate scenarios. This article is based on findings in the report but does not mirror the report with regard to content as it looks at the interest rate impact on assets, liabilities and their interactions. Potential drivers of low rates are identified, along with risk management recommendations for insurers and regulators. These drivers include demographics, behavioral responses to the economy, environmental costs and changes to the economic landscape.

Looking inward at insurer investment practices, background trend information was generated and a survey developed for insurers to share their thoughts. The research continued with conversations in private and public forums, where initial conclusions were expanded.
